Cost benefits of different patio types

Patios and decks are popular outdoor living space additions on Long Island. They can add value to your home and provide a place for outdoor entertaining and relaxation. There are a variety of patio and deck types to choose from, each with its own unique costs and benefits. Here are a few popular patio types and the general costs and benefits. Remember, the costs of labor and materials will vary depending on your region and how intricate you decide to make your build.
I have personally had decks and pour concrete patios installed on my properties and find each to have different benefits.
- Concrete patios are a popular and affordable option, costing an average $6-$8 per square foot. They are durable, low-maintenance, and can be stained or painted to match the style of your home. Plain poured concrete may not be as aesthetically pleasing as other patio types and can crack or become damaged over time if not correctly installed. An upgrade to poured concrete is to ask for stamped concrete. This does add to the costs but allows you to choose a pattern for your patio. Bonus tip.. I don’t suggest installing concrete near trees as their roots can lift the patio and cause cracking over time.
- Paver patios like Nicolock are made of interlocking bricks or stones and have an average cost of $10-$30 per square foot. They are durable, easy to install (sort of), and offer a wide range of design options. You can choose different colors and patterns to match or accentuate your home. They may require more maintenance than concrete patios, as weeds and grass can grow between the pavers, and the joints may need to be refilled over time, but this is not a big deal, and the maintenance can be handled without professional help.
- Natural stone patios are made of natural materials such as flagstone, slate, or bluestone and average $15-$30 per square foot. They are durable and attractive and add a natural aesthetic to your outdoor space. However, they can be more expensive than other patio types and may require more maintenance, as they are prone to cracking and fading over time. Personally, I am not a big fan of natural stone patios due to their durability and costs. I do like them for accents in landscaping.
- Wood patios and decks are made of wood or composite decking and average $15-$30 per square foot (more if you choose composite boards). They are attractive and natural and provide a warm and inviting atmosphere. Composite requires less maintenance than wood, and an overlooked downside is it can get hot, meaning you may not be able to walk on it barefoot. Wood requires more maintenance than other patio types, as they must be regularly sealed and stained to prevent rot and decay. A wood deck or patio may be the best bang for your buck.
When choosing a patio or deck type, it’s essential to consider your budget, the style of your home, and your maintenance preferences. It will be helpful to speak with a contractor or designer to better understand the costs and benefits of different patio types and how they will fit into your outdoor space for your region. On Long Island, there are many qualified contractors to get estimates. Always get more than one estimate and prepare yourself for the joy your new patio or deck will bring to your home.
